The Role of the Community Worker

The Role of the Community Worker is essentially to help to deliver the ‘Vision’ outlined in the ‘Community Strategy’ for the MDA and help implement some of the ‘actions’ detailed in the strategy’s ‘Action Plan’. To achieve this there are three main objectives.

  • To facilitate the creation of a cohesive community that is integrated with the existing community that adjoins it.
  • To facilitate the active involvement of all sectors of the community in sustainable community activity and encourage sustainable lifestyles.
  • To enable the community to develop experience, skills and knowledge, to strengthen their capacity to make improvements to their quality of life, their communities, and the local environment.

For the most part my work to date has focused on the integration of new residents with the existing communities, which has involved attending meetings with various groups and organisations, including Havant Borough Council Officers, local Waterlooville Community Boards, Denmead Parish Council, as well as various local community facilities and schools. This work will continue as I get to learn of other groups I’ll need to contact.

However, my work also focuses on understanding local issues or concerns Dukes Meadow residents  might have as well as understanding the things they enjoy about living in a new community. As a result I undertook a local survey and although the response was not great, it raised some interesting points. A copy of the Community Survey Results 2010 are attached.

Negotiations are currently in progress to provide me with some temporary office accommodation. This will be really useful for a number of reasons, not least of which it will enable me to be more visible to the Duke’s Meadow residents and therefore much easier for them to make contact. I’m also hoping that the facility can be used for any activities the residents might want to see happen, such as establishing a Mother & Toddler group, holding coffee mornings or even inviting local councillors or police officers to hold surgeries there etc. If you’ve got any other ideas or thoughts on what we can use it for, then please let me know.
